Gotta run, but...

We is in Planet Huston, at a *sshhhh* SciFi convention. Had a wonderful time touring Galvenston and showing Sherry what an Ocean looks like. Yes, you can see the ocean from Gulf... you just have to look further out than normal.
Visited the San Jacinto memorial, which was very hot and very cool, all at the same time. I got to walk on a Battleship! I mean..., yes, instrument of death and all that, but it was a very interesting sort of weird sort of light and heavy feeling. Hard to explain.
We rode the ferry between Galveston and umm... whatever that other strip of land is. Riding with the waves rocking under your feet is exactly as I remember it from 48 years ago. Pretty darn nice to know I can remember that. It's also sort of comforting in an odd sort of way.
Well, we are all three well, we haven't killed each other yet, and probably won't. Wish some of you were down here with us- you'd have a blast, I'm sure. Already did NOT get thrown out of a panel discussion.
Gotta run. Somebody needs saving in one of the con rooms.
Love you guys! Adios till later, and then I hope Adios all the time.

Date: 2009-06-30 12:08 am (UTC)As the sun fell into the sea, the lights came on. There were interesting folks with tattoos and short skirts and leather and Harleys wandering around. Lots of bicycles. We ate at a Wendy's, across from the Seawall. Granted, we could have eaten at a place that had a neon Whale's tale and eaten something seafoodish and drank something seadrinkish, but we had plenty of drinkables at the hotel.
We stayed until way after the zombies came, and we found the part of the island they lived in. There is a part of the Island still without power, and we figure that's where they lived.
Speaking of which, I met a writer at the Con - Joe McKinney (www.joemckinney.net/). He's written a couple of Zombie novels, and he's just a darn nice guy. I have a zombie book present for you.
We drove back to the Motel 6 (which, by the way, is not a place I recommend for any one with human sensitivities) in the dark. I saw the glow of the pyramids in Moody Gardens across the bay, and so I took a picture of them.
The next day we drove down 87 so we could eat at a little place near the docks and then take the ferry to the Bolivar Peninsula. It was a cool treat to watch Sherry be excited and I loved the memories of the rocking deck brought back to me. From there we drove on to Huston and to the Convention, so we didn't really see much of Galveston proper, but I really wanted to. I loved the architecture and the quirky feel of the people there.
So... maybe there's another trip in the future. Can I interest you in a ticket south, miss? We have to go to Fredricksburg, too. Just because it was such an amazing little town.

It is one of my favorite places in the whole world. If we ever go together, if Lou's Cajun Corner is still open, the boudin and jerky are on me. It used to be owned by the father of a girl I was in the hospital with in Galveston, and he used to bring us jerky and boudin when he'd come visit her. Galveston also has the best Mardis Gras parades outside of New Orleans, bar none. Then there is Dickens on the Strand around Christmas time....I miss Galveston a lot, obviously. I stopped by there in March of 2008, before Ike hit in September. I was glad I got to see it once more in all of it's glory.
Oh and if you enjoy grave rubbings/ photography, the cemetery there is really amazing, too!
