A Christmas story for you, my children
Dec. 22nd, 2004 01:22 amMany years ago, in a quiet land of snow
There lived a tree that wanted to be nothing more
And nothing less than a christmas tree.
It knew, in it's tree like heart of heart, full of sap and sticky that if it were a christmas tree, it would be the best christmas tree that ever was.
It would strain and shine and grow and become the pointiest and the most shaply tree ever, so that some fine family would come and pick it to be proudly displayed in their house.
Bedecked with lights and ribbons and bows and popcorn and cranberries and throughout the 12 nights of Christmas.
It alone would be the representative of rebirth.. of the coming of the new year.. of Hope reborn
But every year, though it tried and tried.. it was never picked
Other trees were a bit taller
or a bit straighter
or maybe just a bit more ...... pine tree looking
So the little tree became saddened, knowing that, no matter how hard it tried.. it would maybe never be a families Christmas tree...
One winter.. one very very cold winter
The snow came down in great galumping galumps and covered the roads and the trees and the bushes..
The snow came down so hard and so fast that all the smaller trees were covered up and couldn't even be seen!
Nobody could get out of their homes.
Nobody drove the roads to pick a Christmas tree.
The snow was too fierce.. the wind too strong.
So.. the days passed, long, lonely, cold..
Gradually the snows melted.. slowly, slowly..
Soon it would be Christmas! And the folk came out in droves to pick their tree!
Hurry! Hurry, the people came!
They picked this one, and that one and this one over here and that one over there,
But still.. the little tree wasn't picked,
And it cried in silence.. tiny little drips of sap drip drip dripping off the ends of it's branches.
It was Christmas Eve.
The Stars were shining up above and shining down below.
The little tree stood all alone.
Most of the trees around it were taken.
The day had come and gone with comments about how large around it was and how short and squatty it was and the little tree was the saddest it had ever been.
The little tree stood there, in it's quiet misery and felt quiet sorry for itself.
But then.. it felt a tickle,
Just a touch at it's base.
Something was down at it's base!
The tree felt down, as only a tree could and asked in a quiet little voice, 'Who are you? What do you want?'
A voice, just as quiet came back.... 'only a small kitten..lost. I was hoping that you could shelter me for the night. If it is a bother, good tree, I will move on'.
The little tree, feeling so sad and sorry replied 'No.. go ahead.. it makes no difference to me'
So the little kitten curled up against the base and soon was warm and fast asleep.
Soon.. the tree felt more ticklings!
Something else was happening!
It felt down and asked 'Who are you? What do you want?'
And the reply came back.. 'I was looking for my kitten, who had gotten lost... I see she is safe and warm, but I am very tired now. May I stay with her, good tree?'
The little tree turned his branches downward and saw the kittens mother.. and said 'Yes, please. It is good to have some company'.
The mama cat said her thanks to the tree, and snuggled down with the little kitten to sleep.
The night came, and the night went, and soon it was......
Christmas Morning!
The sun came up, bright and shining and happy...
The horrible snows of earlier had almost all melted away, and though it was still bitter cold, it was a warmish sort of day.
All around the little tree were the stumps of the trees that had been taken.
The roads were rutted and muddy from all of the cars that had come and gone.
The little tree stretched and yawned as he woke up.
Suddenly remembering.. he felt down with his branches.. and was surprised!
There was not one, not two, but 6 kittens nestled safe and snug at his base!
Altogether there were 7 cats!
Because.. while the tree slept.. the mama cat had given birth, and because the tree offered them shelter on that cold and dreary night, these kitties were born!
New life had come forth on this Christmas Morning.. and the little tree rejoiced!
He had, in his own quiet way become the thing he had dreamed of becoming
Because he had NOT been cut down, because he had NOT been picked to stand in a house covered with lights.. he became ...
The Bestest example of a Christmas tree! The bringer of New hope! The Bringer of new life!
And that, my dear darling children, is your story of the littlest Christmas tree.
