I remember that Kaylee was sent a communication.... but if there was something in there about this "mission" as Wells put it, you can't assume we'll attribute his apparent lie now to that communication unless you make sure we know what was in it back when it was sent. So we can see very clearly that he is picking up an old thread, not spinning a new one right now.
