Actually, I like this change. You have two incredibly intelligent, naturally suspicious people who, for years, have kept personal emotions out of their lives.
Now, I did try to avoid being way goofy when they pulled their hearts on to their sleeves, and i think I succeeded. They are not being stupid, they are still being cautious, they are still being careful. but here, with Sharon, they get to play, and that is what they are doing here.
Wells does NOT disclose who he works for, and fully expects Sharon to NOT believe him. It's kinda hard to get that across, but sometimes the easiest way to avoid having the truth believed is to tell the truth, in its entirety. There are parts of my life like this.
In reference to them being submissive, look up contrite, which I think would be a much better discription. They aren't submissive people. In this case they are playing.
As far as their reaction to Sharon, the Cabbie. Sharon is the old wize person; the crone on the road that you automatically come to trust just because your gut feeling tells you that you can. She is the mother, sister, confidant, and even YOU like her. She is trust worthy; worthy of trust.
Note that Wells no longer trusts Martin, who is and has been a friend of Wells for a very long time.
And I can understand where you might find it odd or even uncomfortable. I have ridden in a cab with a driver just like Sharon, whose name just happend to be Sharon. It was the last time I rode in a cab, and it was to go visit a friend I had not seen in Forevers. she also gave me some rather good advise.
