On the other hand

I find people that use the word 'plethora' to be pretentious. Then again, the use of the word pretentious may be a bit pretentious, yes?

Every time I read the word "plethora", I hear it in my head in a Spanish accent (thanks to The Three Amigos). If I say the word, it's the same way.

*heh*

Well, you told me I have a plethora. And I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has *no idea* what it means to have a plethora.

as in "I do not think that word means what you think it means"

There are myriad reasons to use either word. Sesquipedalianism for instance :-)

But...sometimes it's really just the perfect word: when one has a superfluity of something, when there's plenty to go 'round, when are almost excessive quantities....
I'm not trying to be pretentious: it simply trips off the tongue...
;D

....I said fecundity the other night and didn't even realize it was weird until the whole table stopped talking and stared at me.

Doc, you sweet talker, you. I could never accuse you of Sesquipedalianism. I might think it...

[identity profile] joegoda.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Fecundity is okay, I would say. See, it's not one of those words that has been 'done' to death. Plethora has had a plethora of pathetic plethoric users. It's almost like they don't know how to say "A lot", because they think that Plethora sounds somehow more 'Hip'.

[identity profile] joegoda.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Really though... when is plethora a more perfect phrase than "A lot", "A bunch", "oodles", "Tons", "Scads" or even "heaps"?

[identity profile] joegoda.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
What's worse are those folks that say Pla-thora rather than Plethera. I dunno. I just think it needs to go into the 'over used' bin until it cools off and behaves itself.

[identity profile] capi.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! See, most of those are... well, garage words, almost. Plethora... in my mind, *plethora* sort of plops down and spreads out in front of the social ladies taking tea in Idaho. It's amusing to me, cuz it feels like one of those round spicy peppers that tricks you by being all shiny and pretty on the outside, but when you bite into it, it explodes with seeds that is kind of like getting a mouth full of happy confetti.

*wonders if that made sense to anyone but her*

[identity profile] capi.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*LOL* I confess, this made me laugh out loud. Fecundity is a theoretical word in my vocabulary, meaning i know it, but i've never brought it out of storage and activated it. Those people were wondering if you were cursing at them. LOL!!
