Signs, Lines, and Connections...
Jul. 24th, 2005 01:57 pmJesus and Buddah are sitting in this bar, see.. and they're just talkin about life.. past lives, future lives, current lives.
Jesus: They got it all wrong, man. I mean, they tried, they really tried. They put in that part about loving your neighbor and all that, but they also keep that old testament thing around, as if it's the important part, and they teach from that too. Just pisses me off. I mean, did I say "I'm here to fullfill the law, not to break it"?? What the fuck did they think I meant? Toss all that 'eye for an eye' crap out, recognise that I was there to show them that the only real way to live a miserable life is to recognise that of course it's miserable, but there is a choice to BE miserable or not while living it.
Buddah: I think it's the whole "Son of God" thing. I think most folks have the idea 'Oh yeah.. that's fine for HIM to say, but I've got mouths to feed and that lousy mother just cut my pay'. I mean.. c'mon. There's not a single mention in the book about how you survived misery, pain, heartache. All that stuff. Where's the humanity of your situation? Well.. not counting that 'My God why hast though forsaken me' thing.
Jesus: Oh, and I'm to blame for what the editors do? Let's talk about misery. I'm out there on the desert, and the personification of all of man's anger, desire and depravity comes and tempts me with the dominion of the earth. I mean, the Whole Earth! Such a decision I wouldn't wish on anyone. Talk about misery.
Buddah: No, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about some mythical science fictiony thing where you meet your antithesis and are given a hard moral choice. I'm talking about real life. No food, nobody to love you, homeless.. or worse, having someone you love, but not being able to get close to them. See, I think that's the biggest misery of all. This Love thing.
Jesus: Love? Jesus Christ! What is so fuckin hard about it? It's there all around them. Every one they connect to, on some level or another they love, and are loved back. Love is not hearts and roses. Love is not supporting till *ahem* Death Do Us Part. Love is not sex mispelled, Thank you very fuckin MUCH, Lenny Bruce, may you rot in hell.
Mary the waitress shows up at the table;
Mary: You guys ready for another round?
Both men nod, Jesus reaches out and touches the hem of her apron.
Jesus: Thank you, b'loved.
Mary walks off.
Jesus: See? There's a perfect example of what I'm talkin about. That woman and I have loved each other through thick and thin. Yeah, we had our problems, but they always worked out, because we KNEW that there was love. When there was nothin else, there was love.
Buddah: Like that time you were in that Hospital...
Jesus: Yeah, just like that. Fuckin shrinks...
Buddah: Now, see.. I have another take on it. I mean, love, yeah, and all that .. but I believe... no... I KNOW that besides the love thing, life will still be miserable, pretty much all the time. Your feet hurt from walking, your back hurts from standing, there will never be enough money..
Jesus: Tell me about it..
Buddah: But there is that choice, like you said. We can remain in misery, letting the knowledge overpower us and make us as miserable as we can possibly CHOOSE, or we can recognise that misery is part of life. Part of that great CIRCLE OF LIFE thing. We are born, we lead crappy lives, and we die. It is through the acceptance of that misery and the recognition of that misery and realizing that we have the choice, as you said, to be miserable or not. The recognition of the state and the recognition of the choice makes the state more bearable. But ONLY if we choose it.
Jesus: And I chose to have another beer. Mary m'love! Where's that beer?
Jesus: They got it all wrong, man. I mean, they tried, they really tried. They put in that part about loving your neighbor and all that, but they also keep that old testament thing around, as if it's the important part, and they teach from that too. Just pisses me off.
