They were shy around each other, darting and dreaming, saying volumes with their eyes that their mouths dare not speak.

They were sitting on the wide, brownish marble bench that went 'round a fountain, which lept at planned intervals and looked like dolphins leaping into the air, trying to escape the hold of gravity.

He stood, and held out his hand. It was a rough thing, a working hand, not as soft as some she had held, but still warm, and it's firmness gave her comfort when she needed it.

She placed her delicate and long fingered hand in his, and he gently helped her to her feet.

"Shall we dance?" he asked.

She glanced, side-long and nervously, at the people milling about, moving most seriously on their way to work or to home. Half embarrased, she whispered, "There isn't any music."

"Then would you hold me?" he asked, softer.

She nodded, and lowered her eyes. She snuggled against his chest, feeling his solid breathing, in and out, and his heart go thump-a-thump. One of his hands went 'round her waist, and the other, still holding hers, put a gentle pressure for her to move.

He spoke tenderly into her hair, which smelled of fresh rain and lilacs. "Can you hear the music now?"

And she did.

"It was awesome! I mean, like, wow! When I was hanging upside down and a hundred feet up, I thought I was gonna die! It felt like my heart was gonna jump out of my chest! I thought to myself 'Dude, that's all she wrote'." He let out a war-whoop and smiled from shaggy ear to shaggy ear. "She just wrote more, dude. She just wrote more."

"The Universe is comprised mostly of hot air and empty space." She took a tiny ice cube from her drink and delicately popped it into her mouth. She crushed the cube between perfect pearl teeth. 'Crush', the ice said softly, in lieu of goodbye. She smiled broadly, and one could almost imagine a mouse's tail hanging from that smile. "Just like you."

He looked up as he unscrewed the cap to his thermos, smiled and shyly said, "Yeah, it was pretty amazing. Standing there on the rim, watching the sun rise. I felt that I could see all the way around the Universe and for that second, before the sun popped over the horizon, I understood what it was really all about."

She sighed. "It's kinda like dying, but not, you know? You have to give up and give in, and for that one wonderful moment the world just goes away, and the universe has nothing in it but you and them."

"I think," he said, considering his words carefully, "that it's the difference between having been bitten by sharks and deciding to dive in to the deep end anyway."
